Where Portuguese cork meets the rhythm of recovery
Founders’ Release Orders Ship Week of July 12
The Roller is a single cylinder of fine-grain cork, harvested by hand from the montado of southern Portugal and shaped in a small atelier outside Évora. It is denser than foam, warmer to the skin, and quieter underfoot. Used slowly, with the breath, it returns weight to the parts of the body that have been holding it on someone else’s behalf.
Cork. Nothing else. The bark of Quercus suber, stripped without felling the tree, regrown every nine years. Naturally anti-microbial. Naturally water-resistant. Naturally yours, for a long time.
“Cork is warm to the touch. That’s the first thing people notice. Unlike foam or plastic, it doesn’t feel clinical.”
On the feel of cork
Engineered for intention. Every element considered.
Broad, sweeping grooves designed for the natural rhythm of myofascial release. Each ridge follows the body's contours for deep, flowing pressure, not the sharp, gridded texture of EVA foam.
Foam rollers are made from expanded polyethylene or EVA, petroleum-based plastics that compress and break down with regular use. They absorb moisture, harbor bacteria, and end their short lives in landfill.
Cork is the bark of Quercus suber, harvested by hand without felling the tree. Its closed-cell structure is naturally resistant to moisture, mold, and microbial growth, a property of suberin, the waxy compound that makes cork waterproof. It does not compress permanently. It does not smell. It does not degrade.
The density of fine-grain Portuguese cork creates firmer, more precise pressure for myofascial release, without the brittleness of high-density foam that bruises rather than releases.
“We didn’t want to make another foam roller. We wanted to create a tool worthy of the ritual it supports, something you’d be glad to leave out in your home.”
On designing SŌMAVEL
This is not a workout. There is no count. Place the roller on the floor and lower yourself onto it. Let gravity do the work. Breathe.
Place the roller beneath your shoulder blades. Let your arms fall open. Close your eyes. Breathe in for four counts. Hold for two. Exhale for six. Repeat three times before moving.
Roll slowly from mid-back to the base of your neck. Pause wherever the body asks you to pause. There is no schedule. Stay with the sensation until it softens, then continue.
Set the roller aside. Lie flat on the floor. Notice the difference between where your body was five minutes ago and where it is now. This is the return.
